Problem:
Almost everywhere in the world and in nearly every society, gender is a critical identifier of how people want to be viewed in the world and of how they view others. Last week, you focused on learning about the social construction of gender, the consequences of these constructions, and how you understand your gendered self. Depending on who you are, where you are, and even when you are (historically speaking), your gender identity can influence your access to goods and services, impact your relationship(s) with friends and family, and provide (or take away) political power and privilege. These instances of social interaction can occur at various times of the day, depending on with whom you interact and in what context. Gender identity is complex and can be frustrating (and sometimes downright terrifying) if you are treated one way in one situation and another way in a different situation, no matter how innocuous it may seem.
