Hello,

My latest proposed problem statement is: It is not known how leadership practices and change management strategies are experienced and enacted in rural hotels with limited HR infrastructure, and how these practices influence employee retention, job satisfaction, and organizational resilience during periods of organizational change.

Several changes took place regarding my proposed problem statement throughout this course. Earlier versions of the study were broader and focused more generally on leadership and change management in small, local, or community-based hospitality organizations. In those earlier versions, the study also emphasized outcomes such as morale, teamwork, and service quality. As the course progressed, the problem statement was refined to focus specifically on rural hotels with limited HR infrastructure and on the outcomes of employee retention, job satisfaction, and organizational resilience.

These changes were made to improve the focus, clarity, and alignment of the study. Narrowing the setting to rural hotels created a more clearly defined context and made the study more manageable. It also helped ensure that the problem statement aligned with the purpose statement, research questions, and data collection plan. By refining the language, the problem became more specific and researchable, which strengthens the overall prospectus.

Based on my proposed problem statement, I have selected a qualitative methodology with a multiple case study design. I selected this methodology because my study is focused on understanding how leadership practices and change management strategies are experienced and enacted in a real-world setting. The purpose of the study is not to test a hypothesis or measure relationships between variables. Instead, it is to explore participants' experiences, perceptions, and meanings within a specific organizational context. Creswell and Creswell (2018) explained that qualitative research is appropriate when a study seeks to explore and understand the meaning individuals or groups ascribe to a social or human problem. This fits my study because I want to understand how employees and managers in rural hotels experience leadership and organizational change.

A multiple case study design is appropriate because the study examines a contemporary issue within its real-life setting. Yin (2018) stated that case study research is suitable when a researcher wants to investigate a phenomenon within its real-world context, especially when the boundaries between the phenomenon and the context are not clearly evident. That description fits my study because leadership practices, change management, retention, and job satisfaction in rural hotels are closely tied to the organizational environment in which they occur. Looking at multiple cases also allows me to compare patterns across settings and gain a deeper understanding of the issue.

One important concept I learned in this class is that methodology should be chosen based on the nature of the problem and the type of knowledge the researcher is seeking, not simply on whether numbers are involved. This strengthened my decision to use qualitative rather than quantitative methodology. My study is centered on open-ended "how" questions, participant experiences, and the importance of context. These features are more consistent with qualitative research than quantitative research. Another concept that strengthened my decision was alignment. I learned that the problem statement, purpose statement, research questions, and methodology must all work together logically. Because my study focuses on understanding lived experiences and organizational processes in a bounded setting, qualitative case study provides the best methodological fit.

I also learned the importance of context in research design. In qualitative research, context is not treated as something separate from the problem; instead, it is part of what must be understood. This was especially important in my study because rural hotels operate under conditions that may differ from larger hospitality organizations, including limited HR infrastructure and staffing challenges. In addition, I learned that qualitative rigor is established through strategies such as triangulation, member checking, and careful coding rather than through statistical testing alone. These ideas helped confirm that qualitative methodology is the stronger choice for my study. Need Assignment Help?
