kwoc key word-out of context index a kwoc

KWOC (Key Word-Out of Context) index

A KWOC index extracts the keyword from the title and the keyword is used as a separate heading with title and accession numbers listed beneath it. Similarly indexes where the keyword appears both as a heading add in the title are known as KWAC (Key Word and Context) indexes.

KWOC (Key Word - Out of context) - Generally KWOC is the generic term used for both KWAC and KWOC.

More refined computer indexing packages are now available, which can be utilised to exercise control in the selection of indexing terms. Such packages assist in widening the indexing field by adding terms from free or controlled vocabularies. But, exerting this type of control might undermine the advantages associated with title indexing. On the other hand, this may provide opportunity to assign indexing terms in accordance with the contents of the document being indexed.
