Job satisfaction and performance improvement

Case Study: What performance appraisal- it's a joke!

James Arnold is a newly appointed graduate staff development officer at the Melbourne head office of OZ Bank. Just before lunch, he and his colleagues have been handed their performance appraisals by Henry Austin. Henry asked them to read, sign and then to have the appraisals back on his desk by two o'clock on the same day (Henry is the legendary department manager at OZ Bank with only a high school qualification working for the last 30 years).

James is somewhat shocked when he is told by Ken Yeo, a 20-year veteran, 'He wasn't joking, mate. You've just had your appraisal and you better like it because that's all you're going to get. He won't listen to anything. If you try to play 'smart', that will be the end of you!'

Answer the following:

1. If you were James Arnold, what would you do?

2. What impact would Henry's approach have on his staff's development, job satisfaction, and performance improvement?

3. If you were the HR manager for OZ Bank, how would you rectify this situation?
