I believe the rich should pay higher taxes based on how much they make, so an argument against this position is that the rich should NOT pay higher taxes based on how much they make. The form of this argument is a deductive argument and it is valid. The argument against it could be that everyone should be treated equally and making people pay higher taxes based on their income is unfair. My response to someone that holds this position is as follows. It is understandable that many people do not believe that people who make more money should be subject to higher taxes. This could be viewed as discriminatory and could in turn cause people to put less time into economic advancement. I can see why people think taxation should be equal for all people, regardless of income. However, income inequality is an extremely large problem that is continuously getting worse as time goes on. There aren't very many ways to solve this, and the two ends of the spectrum afford room for the rich to be taxed more, while the poor need to be taxed less to make up for economic differences.
