Introduction to Physical Anthropology and Archaeology:

Section 1: Define and discuss the significance of the following terms to our understanding of human origins

1. Law of Superposition-

2. Hominin-

3. Replacement Model-

4. Regional Continuity-

5. Diagnostic Artifact-

6. Taphonomy-

7. Mosaic Evolution-

8. Seriation-

Section 2: Fill in the blanks with the corresponding genus and species of the homininfossil on the phylogenetic tree and answer the question that follows.

What does a phylogenetic tree illustrate?

Why are there so many different phylogenetic trees for early Hominins?

Provide at least three reasons why paleoanthropologists spend so much time debating the hominin phylogenetictree in academic conversations.

Section 3: Short Answer.  Be sure to address each part of the question in your answer.

1. Name three Australopithecine species, provide the associated dates for each species, And describe the important evolutionary changes in their morphology. How does each of the species inform our understanding of hominin evolution?

2. Name three methods for getting a date out of an archaeological site.

What materials are necessary for each method?

What are the limitations and benefits of each method?

Why is dating so important to archaeology?

3. Understanding the past environment is critical for paleoanthropological studies.  For this question, answer the following.

How has the environment changed through the Pleistocene and what effects might these changes have had on our past human ancestors? Provide and explain at least three different methods that paleoanthropologists use to understand past environmental conditions.

4. Name four Homo species, provide the associated dates for each species, And describe the important evolutionary changes in their morphology.

How does each of the species inform our understanding of hominin evolution? What are some of the important cultural developments associated with each species?

5. Name 3pathologic conditions that bioarchaeologistscan observe in in past humanskeletal remains.

Describehow the condition presents skeletally andgive specific examples for each. What does each pathology tell us about the health of the individual andpast human conditions? What is the osteological paradox?

Section 4: Essay Question

Provide and discuss three reasons that people might make cave art such as that found in Chauvet Cave.  Use arguments and logical support drawn from Darwinian Evolution and the concept of biocultural evolution to explain the value of each of the three potential reasonsas an adaptive mechanism.  Finally, based on the arguments, from a Darwinian perspective, which of the reasons that you discussed seems like the most likely motivation for cave art?

BE SURE TO ANSWER THE QUESTION COMPLETELY AND CLEARLY.

Section 5: Identify the name andprovide the temporal span for the following stone tool complexes.
