Assignment Objectives: Students are encouraged to work with Internet Layer Protocols and transport layer protocols. This is research and practical based assignment which allow students work independently and providing evidence and critical evaluation of the topic.

Assignment Tasks:

Task 1: Students need to submit a work proposal for this assignment.

Task 2: writing t reports:

A. Student needs to prepare a report summarizing the key concepts based on published research paper about Internet of things protocols.

B. Student needs to prepare a report discussing the difference between Ipv4 and Ipv6 for IoT.

Task 3: Student needs to perform simulation activity that is intended to provide a foundation for understanding the Transmission Control Protocol and User Datagram Protocol in detail. Simulation mode provides the ability to view the functionality of the different protocols. This activity provides an opportunity to explore the functionality of the TCP and UDP protocols, multiplexing and the function of port numbers in determining which local application requested the data or is sending the data.

Task 1: Submit a work proposal for this assignment on or before the above mentioned date.

A report need to be submitted in an MS Word document having the following things:

a) Understanding deliverables - a detailed description of deliverables.

b) General overview of the proposed plan with initial understanding of solution to task 2 and task 3.

c) Resources identified.

d) Time schedule

Task 2:

A. A Student is required to write a literature review about the protocols stack for Internet of Things environment. You need to do a literature review about "protocols stack for IoT " from any scholarly articles. (Hint: your literature review should include the architecture of IoT protocol stack and a detailed discussion on the layers and the protocols in each layer)

B. IPv4 includes many limitations and facing variant challenges to support the deployment of Internet of things. Therefore, it strongly recommended to move to IPv6 for better future of IoT. In this context, write a discussion report on using IP for IoT. (Hint: your report should include: limitations and challenges of using IPv4 for IoT, capabilities of IPv6 for IoT, deployment of Pv6)

Task 3: For the above simulation, Student needs to examine functionality of the TCP and UDP Protocols by the following steps.

i) Configure the above topology properly.

ii) Configure Multiplexing as all of the traffic crosses the network.

iii) Examine DHCP traffic as the clients communicate with the server.

iv) Examine HTTP traffic as the clients communicate with the server.

v) Examine FTP traffic as the clients communicate with the server.

vi) Examine SMTP traffic as the clients communicate with the server.

Structure:

A. Student needs to prepare a report summarizing the key concepts based on published research paper about Internet of things protocols.

a) IOT protocol stacks (no standardized stacks).

b) Explain the functionalities of the layers in each stack.

c) What are the protocols in each layer?

B. Student needs to prepare a report discussing the difference between Ipv4 and Ipv6 for IoT.

a) Internet Protocol (multiple versions)

b) Compare IPV4 with IPV6

c) What are the limitations of IPV4? E.g. limited IP addresses, security issues etc.

d) How is IPV6 more suitable for IOT?

e) How to migrate from IP V4 to IP V6
