To what extent has the policy effectively addressed the instance of economic inequality you have selected?

Overview:

During our two pervious assignment cycles, you learn about practiced, and applied an array of critical reading , invention, and revision strategies. Our current assignment will require you to draw upon these strategies once more, but will also ask you to incorporate into your writing process research practices that make the most of library resources –s both digital and physical. You will use these resources to identify materials that will help you support an argument about the relationship between race and class, the economy, and public policy. Your goal will be to choose an economic concern that maters to you, find out what others have written about it, and position your argument within that larger conversation.

Context:

The American dream continues to dominate popular conceptions of the U.S. as a place of supposedly limitless possibility in which anyone, no matter their race or class, can acieve success. However, as scholar Bruce Jodson asserts the U.S. is currently “At the highest level of income inequality in …. History”, which raises the question: for whom does the American dream remain alive? How feasible is it for the immigrant or for colonized minorities like blacks and Native Americans to achieve upward mobility? And how the scarcity of jobs and economics security brought on by the great recession affected not only the conversation on race, class, and the economy, but also the resulting public policies enacted to deal with it? These are some of the very questions that you will investigate in wrigin project.

For this assignment, choose an economic concern that matters to you. Relevant options include residential segregation, affordable housing, homelessness, the “Wage gap”, unemployment, poverty, undocumented workers, anything, basically , that deals with race, class, and the economy. Then, identify a recently passed policy meant to address this concern and assess the effectiveness of that policy.

We will use the word “policy” loosely in this assignment- any program, initiative, bill, or law counts. Your policy must have passed , however. Also, you may selected a policy more than four years old the policy if it has been revised or amended in some way since 2010.

In compiling evidence, you must choose:

At least threepeer reviewed sources, one of which must be a physical book checked out from the library.

Up to five popular but still credible sources. Note up to five means just that – you are not obliged to use any popular sources, but you may use up to three.

You will need to use your sources to identify the nature of the debate on your economic issue and assess the policy intended to address it. Your perr-reviewed sources in particular should help you understand why your economic concern is significant to issue of social inequality in America. Because peer-revied sources on recent policies may not exist, try to find smart, critically thoughtful articles about  current policies in newspapers, magazines, or ther news sources in order to support your assessment.

If you conclude that your policy has not done an adequate job of addressing economic inequality, make an argument about what must be done differently in your conclusion in order to answer the so what question.
