Although we have tackled numerous topics since the first essay, two overarching themes we have explored in the century after the French Revolution are the Industrial
Revolution and the emergence of modern political ideologies, and the effects of each of these phenomena on the 19th-century West. Write an essay that shows the relationship between the Industrial Revolution and three of the ideologies we talked about. How did the Industrial Revolution contribute to the development of these ideologies? How did your three ideologies view the Industrial Revolution? Overall, which do you think shaped Western society more over the period between 1815-1914, the new ideologies that emerged after the French Revolution or the material developments stemming from industrialization?

These essays are not research papers, but papers designed to evaluate how well you can use material from this class readings, lectures, and discussions to present a convincing historical argument. In order for it to be successful, you will need to draw on both lecture and reading material. If I see material in your paper that did not come from our class, it will only hurt your score, and I will grow suspicious about where you found this information if you have not cited it properly. Anyone caught plagiarizing, i.e., presenting other people’s ideas as if they were your own will be punished according to the cheating policy on the syllabus. To cite documents and books we have read in this class, you need only put the author’s name in parentheses at the end of the sentence that contains the quote or reference, followed by the page number. You need not cite lecture material. I will know the material you are pulling from the lectures.
So please do not use any source that is not from the sources I provide. The text book we use is Joshua Cole, et al., Western Civilizations, Volume 2, Brief Third Edition (New York: Norton, 2013). The chapters for this essay are chapter 19 to 23.
