In which developmental stage the supervisee falls


Problem:

The supervision model that I am most attracted to is an integrated model. Integrated models address skill and competency of the supervisee in light of which developmental stage the supervisee falls under (SAMSHA. 2025). This model integrates different aspects of other models based on need and uses evidence-based practices to do so. This is a model that my supervisor has implemented at my internship and it has helped within supervision to ensure we are targeting areas of growth without feeling confined to a specific format within supervision.

I believe that supervision is a time for counselors to connect with a more experienced counselor and receive feedback in several areas. This can look very different depending on the population of clients, the counselor's personal experience, and the counselor's development. Supervision for me personally has been a mixture of all of these things. Especially as I am a new counselor, much of supervision has been discussion of what to expect and learning how to navigate the influx of information I have received.

My supervisor has been very supportive in answering my questions and challenging me to think deeper about my motivations and possible areas of growth. Supervisors provide support to their supervisees first in understanding the role of counselor then more specifically to case conceptualization. They also can provide professional support as newer counselors are navigating a new career. It is important to remember that supervisors are not counseling their supervisees. There may be times that personal issues will be discussed in supervision if they are impacting sessions or our biases towards clients. As a supervisee, it is important to seek feedback and be open to feedback. Supervisees should come to supervision with questions about their clients or other topics within counseling. Being curious as a supervisee goes a long way.

Supervision was something I felt intimidated by initially but is now something I look forward to on a weekly basis. Entering into supervision noticing how I am coming in, whether that is tired, or more defensive is important as I am preparing to hear feedback that will push my professional development.
