Assignment 1 - Healthy People Initiatives

In a two page paper, examine the history and development of the Healthy People initiatives. Discuss some of the successes and shortfalls of the three initiatives thus far; including Healthy People 2000, Healthy People 2010, and Healthy People 2020. Be sure to include statistical data from the initiatives to support your position.

Assignment 2 - Definition of Critical Thinking

The first reading contained the following definition of critical thinking:

According to the article, Critical Thinking as Defined by the National Council for Excellence in Critical Thinking, (https://www.criticalthinking.org/pages/defining-critical-thinking/766), "Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning or communication, as a guide to belief and action. (Critical Thinking.org)

This definition uses words with which you may be unfamiliar. For our assignment this week, you will need to write an extended definition of each of the following words and demonstrate how these words apply to the critical thinking process and to your own experiences:

  • Conceptualizing
  • Analyzing
  • Synthesizing

Your assignment this week will be a five-paragraph essay, each paragraph should address the following:

Paragraph One

Begin by writing your own definition of critical thinking. Consider the following questions to guide your definition:

  • What does it mean to think critically?
  • What is the difference between thinking and thinking critically?
  • What do we gain or lose by thinking critically?

Paragraphs Two, Three, and Four

Once you have your definition of critical thinking, look up the definition for each of the three words listed above, and, in a paragraph for each word, use those definitions to describe how each of them apply to your definition of critical thinking. Be sure to identify the source or sources where you found your definitions. If you use any direct words from a source, be sure to place those words in quotation marks.

Paragraph Five

In your concluding paragraph, give an example or examples of a time or times when you applied critical thinking in your own life.

Your completed assignment should be written primarily in first person and should be 500-750 words in length. If you use sources in your writing, be sure to identify them. If you use any direct language from a source, be sure to place those words in quotation marks.

Assignment 3 - Probation Success and Failure

Chapter twelve of the text discusses probation and other forms of alternative sentencing. Not putting people in jail is a good idea, but only if the alternative to incarceration is successful.

In your written assignment this week, describe what factors may cause probation to be successful or not. What are the roles of the corrections organization, the probation officer, and the offender in the outcome of the probationary period? When can we determine the probationary period be deemed a success? At what point would an attempt at productive probation sentence be deemed a failure?

For reference material use at least your text and two or more of the following sources. As always, remember to identify passages in your essay where you are quoting, paraphrasing, or summarizing as well as the source you are using.

Your paper must be formatted in the following manner:

  • The paper must be 500-750 words in length. Only the body of the paper countstowards the length. No information that belongs on a title page or referencepage will count towards the length requirement.
  • Use Times New Roman 12 point font, and double-space your lines.

Assignment 4 - Persuasive Essay Rough Draft

This essay explores the persuasive mode, one of the more common kinds of writing you'll experience throughout your college and professional career. Your goal is to persuade your audience to consider your position on a controversial subject. Understand, there is seldom a definitive right or wrong answer in anything. You should anticipate the real possibility that some of your readers will not initially agree with you on your stance. Part of this essay requires that you take opposing viewpoints into consideration when making your argument. By truthfully representing the strengths of your opponent's point of view, you show that you have considered more than one option when making your decision. This gives you more clout with your audience.

Criteria

The rough draft of your essay should contain the following basic features:

  • A well-defined issue that is controversial by nature
  • A clear thesis statement that demonstrates the position you will be taking throughout the essay
  • A treatment of at least three reputable sources, at least one drawn from the EBSCO database, and at least one of them supporting your claim
  • A counter argument with at least one credible source defending the opposing viewpoint
  • A refutation to or compromise with the counter argument

In addition to the above, the rough draft of your essay should be:

  • From 900 to 1200 words in length, typed in Times New Roman, 12pt. font, double-spaced, with one inch margins
  • Written primarily in third person
  • Edited for spelling, mechanical, grammatical, and typing errors

Please note: you will have the opportunity to revise and perfect this essay, but you should do your best to make this draft as complete as possible so you can receive more relevant feedback from your instructor.
