Implement new process that will improve current workflow

Assignment task:

As nurse informaticists (NI), we must be comfortable with initiating reviews of processes, identifying process barriers, and implementing a new process that will improve the current workflow. To implement a new process, NI's also be well-versed in how to manage change for the end users.

In a review of studies conducted in 2021, it was found that the best and most lasting change begins within the host organization and that non-supervisor personnel showed excitement for and approved of the changes made. However, if the change was initiated from outside of the organization and did not garner approval from the end users, the speed of the improved process implementation is hindered significantly (Harrison, et. al., 2021).

To affect effective change management, NIs should cultivate shared decision-making with staff to ensure that end-user needs are being heard and met. Using this technique will also decrease the likelihood of having surprise implementation barriers (Turja, 2022). Another strategy NI can use is staff-level change agents or trainers. Change agents are end-user staff that is trained on the new process changes and can be used as ground-level resources to other staff when they experience difficulties during the implementation process (Cusson, Meehan, Bourgault & Kelley, 2020).

To be effective agents of change NIs must cultivate the ability to be competent in conflict resolution and critical thinking skills. Both sets of skills are needed to have "hard" conversations with resistant staff and to navigate conflicting needs presented by other implementation stakeholders.
