Im having trouble with a physics question phase angle is

Im having trouble with a physics question: Phase angle is the difference between the current i(t) and the voltage v(t) of the sine wave source. In the experiment you actually measure the phase angle between vR (t) and v (t) rather than i(t) and v(t), why?

And also, how can I tell if the voltage from a signal generator leads or lags a current?
