Sample Experimental Model: nutrition for plants
In order to understand the requirements for plants to grow, a group of students decided to model the growth of plants in different soils in order to deduce the role of each nutrient in soil. The following experimental method was used:
1. Four different types of soil were prepared, each in a separate pot. Soil A was obtained from a natural grassland where rockcress normally grow, soil B was soil that did not contain any iron, soil C was dry soil with no water content and soil D was soil that did not contain any phosphates (a common component of fertiliser). All pots contained the same mass of soil.
2. In each pot, small rockcress plant was planted.
3. The plants were left in the sun and the mass of each pot was measured each day for 5 days.
