THE MANAGER'S MEMO

FROM: I. Rand, President
TO: T. Meyers, Vice President, Human Resources
RE: Leadership development Program

To support our plans to open 10 new stores over the next 5 years, I think we need a program to develop future store managers. I would like your support in creating a leadership development program. This program would have two phases:

(a) identifying employees with leadership potential and

(b) developing in them the skills that make a person a good leader.

Submit to me your recommendations for how to carry out each phase of this program. If you submit these recommendations in the form of a general outline of what the program should include, we can discuss the details in a meeting next week.

CASE DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Assume that you are the vice president of the human resources division, and write a response to the president's memo. Use the material in the chapter as a resource for outlining a program you think will most likely succeed in meeting the president's objectives. Consider also the type of leadership most likely to be important in a store manager.
