Identify the level of evidence that the program works and

Question:

Four different substance abuse prevention programs are briefly described below:

1) Head On,

2) Project 7th Grade,

3) Growing Healthy and

4) Project Alert.

Each description also includes a description of the evidence that the program works.

Using only the information provided here about each program, answer the following questions:

For each program,

(1) identify the level of evidence that the program works (e.g., Anecdotal? Pre-post test only? RCT?);

(2) Indicate whether this evidence is weak, moderate, or strong evidence; and

(3) Explain why it is considered weak, moderate, or strong evidence.

Which program do you think has the strongest evidence that it works? Which program has the weakest evidence that the program works?

* Most of the descriptions are taken word-for-word from websites for these programs (citations provided). These descriptions were obtained in 2006, so they may not reflect the current information about these programs. For that matter, they may not reflect all of the information about the program that was available at the time. This information is not intended to help you decide once and for all if this program works. To do that, you would want to read much more about each program. Instead, this exercise should help you practice identifying the level of evidence based on brief descriptions of interventions.
