Identify the different types of sampling approaches

Problem

Objective: Identify the different types of sampling approaches and demonstrate the ability to apply the sampling concepts for each scenario.

Instructions: For each of the scenarios, answer the following questions. In some of the scenarios, suggest the most probable sampling method and provide justifications as to why you think that is the most appropriate way to approach it.

Scenario 1

The Malaysian government would like to understand the efficacy of various vaccines based on individuals who have received two doses of vaccine shots. In Malaysia, there are several vaccines that are available, primarily, AstraZeneca, Sinovac and Pfizer. They are proposing to collect about 30% of samples from the population. Describe how do you think they should design their sampling approach if they were to adopt stratified sampling? Do you think this is an effective way of doing it (i.e. Consider the bias factor of the method)? Why?

Scenario 2

Sunway Pyramid would like to conduct a quick survey to request consumers to rate their shopping experiences at Sunway Pyramid mall. They are proposing to approach prospective customers at the mall to fill up the survey. Based on this scenario, what kind of sampling approach should they undertake and why? Do you think this is an effective way of doing it (i.e. Consider the bias factor (and other factors) of the method)?

Scenario 3

Uniqlo has a loyalty programme that rewards their members. Based on the database of 250,000 registered customers in Malaysia, they would like to find out from their customers about the service quality of their staff members based on customers' past experiences purchasing from Uniqlo at the physical stores. They intend to collect about 10% response rate from the 250,000 registered customers. How do you think Uniqlo can design their sampling approach based on systematic approach? Describe the steps.

Scenario 4

AXA Insurance would like to interview some participants to understand the reasons as to why the uptake of health insurance differs significantly among different races, namely Malay, Chinese and Indian. These participants must not have purchased any personal health insurance before. Which sampling method would AXA Insurance likely adopt and why? Do you think this is an effective way of doing it (i.e. Consider the bias factor (and other factors) of the method)?

Scenario 5

IKEA has recently used Augmented Reality (AR) in their mobile application to allow consumers to "try" out their furniture in their living rooms. IKEA is keen to seek consumers' feedback on the interface of their mobile application and the feelings consumers have towards their app. What sampling approach is most suitable if they are keen to conduct a survey on those who have had experience using their app and tried their AR feature on the app? Why do you think this is the most suitable method? Do you think this is an effective way of doing it (i.e. Consider the bias factor (and other factors) of the method)?
