All course content will be accessed using "Navigate Public Health" - ISBN: 9781449645717. B. Course Description: Introduces students to the concepts, principles, and outcomes of public health. Students will explore theories of health, illness behavior, and health education considering community health data sources, classical health intervention approaches, and the planning and evaluation of community health interventions. Course provides basic knowledge and skills needed for conducting community needs assessment with diverse populations. Additional topics such as infectious diseases, environmental health, chronic diseases, maternal and child health, and women's health are also covered. C. Course Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students should be able to do the following: 1. Identify eras in the historical development of public health and ways that public health emerges in literature and the arts, current events, and everyone's daily life. 2. Illustrate the interdisciplinary, cross-cutting, or ecological character of public health and the contributions of a range of disciplines and professions to improving health. 3. Explain the basic principles of epidemiology, including rates, risk factors, disease determinants, causation, and public health surveillance. 4. Explain how public health assesses the options for intervention to improve the health of a population. 5. Explain how public health can utilize health information and health communications to improve the health of populations. 6. Explain how public health can utilize social and behavioral interventions to improve the health of populations. 7. Explain how public health can utilize health policy and law to improve the health of populations. 8. Describe the basic organization of health care and public health systems and the contributions of health professionals. 9. Identify the basic payment mechanisms for providing health services and the basic insurance mechanisms for paying for health services. 10. Identify criteria for evaluating health systems including issues of access, quality, and cost. 11. Identify the roles of public health in addressing the needs of vulnerable populations and health disparities. 12. Identify the roles of public health in disaster prevention and management. Evaluation Your final grade will be determined using the following formula: Discussion - 50% For each lesson throughout the course, you will engage in the discussion forum. Follow the instructions that are posted in the online course "Navigate Public Health." Quizzes - 50% For each assigned lesson, there will be a quiz. The quizzes will be timed therefore, it is essential that you have an understanding of the material. It is your responsibility to complete the quizzes during the indicated time period. Course Grades Final grades will be equivalent to the following number of points: 92 - 100% = A 77 - 79% = C+ 90 - 91% = A- 70 - 76% = C 87 - 89% = B+ 68 - 69% = C- 82 - 86% = B 60 - 67% = D 80 - 81% = B- 0 - 59% = F Attendance/Participation Policy This is a fully online course therefore, it is your responsibility to read the appropriate material and engage in discussions. If you have questions about services for students with disabilities or procedures for requesting services, you may contact the Office of Counseling Services at 488-2663. *This course meets the federal requirements of an amount of work equivalent to 1 hours of class attendance plus an expected 30 hours of out-of-class work per credit hour. A special note for winter intersession courses: Keep in mind that this course in a normal semester requires a total of 40 hours of lecture (not including exam days), and at least 90 hours of self-study (i.e., reading the text, working on your paper, studying). Although there will be less of a lecture component, in order to succeed in this class, you will need to spend more time on self-study. Including weekends, there will be only 23 days total of this course. So, to succeed in this course, plan to devote approximately 6 hours of work every day to this course. These 6 hours may include reading the text, studying, working on practice problems, engaging in discussion forums, and completing quizzes. December 22 - 26 Lesson 3: Health Informatics and Health Communications Lesson 4: Social and Behavioral Sciences and Public Health Lesson 5: Health Law, Policy, and Ethics Lesson 6: Non-Communicable Diseases Quizzes for Lessons 3-6 should be completed by December 28 th, 9 p.m. You should follow the discussion forum instructions for each lesson and engage in discussion regarding the topic presented. December 29 - January 2 Lesson 7: Communicable Diseases Lesson 8: Environmental Health and Safety Lesson 9: Health Professionals and the Health Workforce Lesson 10: Healthcare Institutions Quizzes for Lessons 7-10 should be completed by January 4 th, 9 p.m. You should follow the discussion forum instructions for each lesson and engage in discussion regarding the topic presented. January 5 - 9 Lesson 11: Healthcare Systems Lesson 12: Public Health Institutions and Systems Lesson 14: The Future of Population Health Quizzes for Lessons 11,12, & 14 should be completed by January 9 th, 9 p.m. You must follow the discussion forum instructions for each lesson and engage in discussion regarding the topic presented.
