Assignment Details

For each assignment, complete the following steps:

1. Include the actual article in your assignment. A link to the article is not sufficient. Include headline, reporter's name, newspaper or magazine title, and date.

2. Provide the context of the article: give some background information and data to enhance our understanding of the article.

3. Next, explain in easy-to-understand language what the article is saying, e.g. explain it to someone in grade 9. Avoid economics terminology such as inflation, depreciation, deficit, etc.

4. Next, explain what the economics article is saying in your own words, but using economics terminology.

5. Next, evaluate what the reporter or editor has said. Does he/she display a Keynesian or an Austrian bias? Has he omitted something relevant? Has he erred in his understanding? Could he have been clearer? Or has he done a good job representing the situation, its causes, and its cures?

6. Finished? Check your writing for grammatical errors, or go to the Writing Centre at Stauffer Library. Assignments with grammatical errors will be penalized.

7. Have you referenced every source that you used for information? Be sure not to plagiarize! Put quotation marks around every quotation.

8. Now it's time submit the assignment. Please do not zip your files. Please do not send me zoom-in posters.

Each of the news article analysis assignments will be marked out of 10 as follows:

• 0 or 1 mark for absence of grammatical and spelling errors

• 0 or 1 mark for properly displaying the headline and source of the news article, and for citing any sources used other than the original newspaper article. For example, if you used Wikipedia for some background information on your country, you must reference Wikipedia at the end of your paper.

If you fail to list your references, and especially if you quote someone word for word without using quotation marks, you may face serious academic penalties for plagiarism (see course website re. "Academic Integrity"). Email the professor if you are unsure what to do.
