MANAGEMENT AND ORGANISATION CHANGE

You will be assessed in this module in the following ways.

i. End of Unit Progress Tests

At the end of each Unit you will be asked to undertake an 'End-of-Unit Test' when you are ready. Your first attempt only of each test will count towards 10% of the marks awarded for this module.

ii. Coursework Assignment

You will also be required to submit an essay assignment of 4000 words. The essay should follow the pattern of an introduction, the main theme and a conclusion. Detail of the actual assignment will be posted on the Virtual Learning Environment. General guidance on writing an essay is given below.

The coursework will account for 90% of the marks awarded for this module.

The Assignment Brief:

Part One:

‘Lack of motivation and group working could be contributory factors in organisational conflict'.

With specific reference to an organisation of your choice and recognising the interests of the key stakeholders, identify and discuss possible conflicts which may arise. In addition you are required to evaluate how conflict between these elements may help or hinder the attainment of organisational goals.

Part Two:

With reference to an organisation of your choice, critically evaluate how the leadership style adopted by a manager may either facilitate or hinder change in organisations.

Considerations: You should follow these guidelines to help you plan your coursework:

o Definitions, examples and theories surrounding goals, objectives and motivation from a range of academic sources.

o Identify and discuss organisational and individual goals from the perspective of the key stakeholders. Evaluate how the organisation can fulfil its main business objectives while recognising the interests of the stakeholders and the community in which it operates.

o An analysis of how these theories might work. You should consider different workplaces, industries and reasons for change. You should explore the advantages and disadvantages of the theories presented in obtaining organisational effectiveness.

o An evaluation of how successful power, politics and conflict are in ensuring organisational effectiveness. Are other factors which may contribute? Does a motivated workforce always result in an effective organisation?

o You need to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the models/theories and concepts in relation to managing change through their application to an organisational setting.

o Greater credit will be given to work showing originality, a holistic response to the task and reference to current data and examples to support points made.

o It is important to draw a parallel between the theory and practice and use appropriate references for the given facts.
