How your own cultural identity has developed over the years

Application: Cultural Identity Portrait This week, you learned about the complex nature of cultural identity. Not only is cultural identity based on many different factors-gender, ethnicity, and religion, to name a few-it is also ever-shifting.

As you age and develop and as the society around you changes as well, so too does your relationship with this society and thus the composition of your cultural identity. Cultural identity can be especially dynamic during childhood and adolescence.

This is because children and adolescents are constantly renegotiating their senses of self and their relationships with others as they develop and mature at an often rapid pace.

In this assignment, you will consider how your own cultural identity has developed over the years and how it may have influenced your development as a child and adolescent. In a 2-page paper, respond to the following questions:

• How would you describe your cultural identity today? To which groups do you belong? Which group memberships are most important or significant, and which are least?

• How does your cultural identity today compare with your cultural identity when you were a child or adolescent? What similarities or differences do you think exist, and why?

• How do you recall your culture and cultural identity affecting your experiences or outlook growing up?

Do you think that culture affects children and adolescents differently today? Why or why not? Submit this assignment by Sunday of this week.
