How you work to anticipate or prevent conflict at meeting

Assignment task: Shine Care Home was built 25 years ago in what is now a deteriorating area of the city. It is home to 50 long-term residents. For several months, Shine Care Home residents and the administrator have been asking the board for repair and safety work to be completed. Nothing has been done.

The chair of the board (COB) wants Shine Care Home to relocate to another area of the city. The COB's plan includes spending millions of dollars on building a new 30-bed structure about 25 miles away. The new location is an affluent area of the city with several long-term care facilities. If this happens, Shine Care Home will be demolished. However, there are serious ongoing efforts to rebuild this part of the city, and city officials are anxious for Shine Care Home to stay at its current location.

The price to stay in the new facility would exceed what the currently Shine Care Home residents can pay. Also, the new location would be too far for staff and resident's family members to drive. There are no other affordable long-term care options for many of the residents.

The COB just had a "confrontational" phone conversation with the administrator of Shine Care Home. The COB threatened to terminate the administrator if she was unwilling to support the construction of the new facility. In response, the COB shouted, "The bulldozers will be there to demolish Shine Care Home in 120 days!" Then, the COB abruptly hung up the phone.

There is a board meeting next week. The administrator, the director, and the chief of nursing from Shine Care Home have been told to attend. Each of these professionals opposes the COB plan to demolish Shine Care Home.
