Objectives
Critical response papers are designed to enhance your critical thinking and writing skills, as well as your understanding of some of the important historical moments and events in modern Korean history. To this end, you are required to write one critical response paper from this parts: 1) various topics in the contemporary South Korean society since 1990s (Weeks 8-10); For each individual week within each of this part, I expect you to contemplate how the discussions from that week fit into the larger changes and developments that occurred in each of the three parts.
Grading Guidelines
Critical response papers will be graded on a grading scale, based on the following three categories.
1) "Big Picture" : How you demonstrate that you fully understand the main arguments of the assigned readings, how they are related to one another, and how they fit into the larger picture of Korean history.
2) Depth of Discussion : How you engage with some of the main themes and issues that you found interesting and/or problematic in the readings; you can share your comments and critiques, or raise issues or questions.
3) Sources, Organization, and Writing Style : The papers should incorporate all readings, be well organized, and be free of spelling and grammar errors. When you cite the readings, indicate it by the last name of the author and the page number in parenthesis. For example, --- (Kim, 45).
