How will you reassure them that they have been heard

Problem

Scenario:

Sasha, one of your sales representatives, recently retired. Two of her coworkers, Paulo and June, each thought that Sasha's administrative assistant Jolene should be assigned to them. As their supervisor, they're waiting for you to make the decision, each confident that you will decide in their favor.

Paulo argued that he was relatively new and depended heavily on his assistant, especially since he hasn't found his colleagues helpful or accommodating. He's convinced that he is being discriminated against and has spoken to you about his feelings in the past. Besides, Paulo has the largest region and is still struggling to keep things organized, and Jolene would bring the experience needed to support his efforts. Paulo wants to talk with you immediately so that you can "do the right thing."

June was livid when she realized that Paulo was trying to get Jolene assigned to him. She had put in a request for Jolene months ago when she first heard of Sasha's retirement. June knows Paulo is unhappy and may not even stay with the company, so there's no point in assigning him valuable resources. Many of Paulo's coworkers complain that he is demanding and has a negative attitude. As an individual with clear seniority, June was confident that Jolene would be much happier and more effective working with her. June has also made an appointment to see you; you know she is upset and has a reputation for being straightforward and even outspoken. The grapevine will be very active, regardless of whether you assign Jolene to Paulo or June.

After carefully considering this dilemma, determine who you think has the strongest case for working with Jolene: Paulo or June. Create a post in which you share your answers to the following questions with other learners, who will then respond with their opinions and insights.

Task

A. What factors did you consider in evaluating the situation (i.e., why do you think this particular employee should get to work with Jolene)?

B. When you meet with the employee who is being turned down:

a. What variables do you anticipate will be influencing their ability to listen objectively?
b. How will you reassure them that they have been heard?

C. Given the background of the employee you turn down, what do you anticipate will be your most evident listening challenge when you tell them your decision? What components of the HURIER model will be most essential for a successful conversation?
