Assignment : Adopt a Transit System

This assignment aims to give students a practical example upon which to demonstrate understanding, of the first 4 topics in this unit.

This assignment is a report in two parts:

Part 1: Overview of Adopted Transit System; and

Part 2: Relative Performance of Adopted Transit System

Part 1: Overview of Adopted Transit System

Provide a broad outline of your adopted transit system and the factors which you believe have shaped its development. This should cover the following, topics:

• History- - an outline history including key developments and how this has influenced the system as it is today

• System Objectives. An outline of the stated system objectives. Are there any potential objectives missing? How have these factors influenced service design and development?

• Stakeholders. Who are the stakeholders and how do their views/opinions vary?

• Markets. Who are the users? Describe trends and typical behaviour patterns. What factors have acted to affect the market for public transport?

Part 2: Relative Performance of Adopted Transit System

You are required to analyse the relative performance of your adopted public transport system against appropriate peer systems. The aim of this analysis is to identify areas for improvement of the system. You must identify appropriate peers and collect data on a range of performance measures which you consider appropriate to assessing overall performance.

You must use data from either (or both) the Florida Transit Information System or the UITP 1997 Databank. Use of wider data sources is acceptable and encouraged. However data from at least one of the above sources should be included for at least part of the analysis. Your conclusions in identifying areas for improvement should be strictly based on the performance analysis presented. Any issues or problems you find in making objective assessment of performance data should be noted.

The analysis should consider a range of potential viewpoints on what good performance is.

Reporting Requirements

The whole report should be of the order of 3,000 to 4,000 words long (i.e. 10 to 13 pages of text). The two parts of the report should be broadly similar in length.

Your paper will be graded on the following criteria:

• How well does the paper reflect the perspectives given in Units 1 to 4?

• Has the relevant literature been researched, correctly cited and connected to the topic?

• Is the paper clearly written with attention given to structure, layout and English expression, including proof-reading to eliminate obvious misspelling, grammatical or typographical errors?

• Does the writer demonstrate a clear understanding of the topic and the realities of performance assessment?
