Introduction

Students deal with trauma and bullying in the classroom. Trauma in childhood can disrupt normal developmental processes. Many of the children who are affected by traumatic stressors such as bullying can have their developmental processes and parts of their brains affected by the traumatic events (Bullying in School: The Traumatic Effects of Bullying on Children, 2022). Students that are being bullied must be encouraged to report the acts and actions of bullies.

Reflection

Group motivation was developed by building relationships with your students. Building relationships with your students sets the tone that when the teacher appears happy and motivated then your students will respond the same. Establishing routines lets students know what is expected of them when they enter the classroom. Setting up class Dojo (which is a point's system), the students get points for good behavior, showing moral focus virtues to other students or teachers, or anything that the teacher want to give extra points for which add up to go to the Dojo store at the end of the month and purchase items or food with their Dojo points.

Behavior expectations in the classroom are posted in the classroom where students can refer to the classroom expectations. The students signed a social contract that they will follow expectations of the classroom rules and the teacher referred to the social contract when the students broke the rules. The teacher was consistent with rewarding students when they follow the expectations and establishing consequences when they didn't. Dojo points were deducted from students when they did not follow the classroom expectations.

Communication between parents and teachers starts with positivity. The teacher contacted the parent or guardian, she started out by saying something positive about him or her.  It's vital for parents to trust their child's teacher. When speaking to parents, assure them that everything you discuss is confidential and that an important role as the teacher is to motivate them, inform the parents of the expectations so that helps if those at home support the behavior expectations you have at school and safety procedures. Promote community resources to families with clear explanations of what the services available are and how families can access them about trauma.

Teachers can help kids prevent bullying by students having discussions about it, building a safe school atmosphere. Addressing any bullying situation immediately lets students know it is not acceptable. Students need to know that teachers care and want each of them to be comfortable. They also need to trust that they can come to you in confidence, to report bullying they observe or know about (Bullying in Your Classroom - Do you know how to deal with it, 2018).

Ensuring safety in the class by having students practicing fire drill, lockdown, evacuation, routines etc. The 3rd grade self-contained teacher has a safe space area in her classroom. Providing a safe space for children to safely navigate their learning environment is important. When students are feeling overwhelmed by their emotions, they need space to be alone. They need a known part of the classroom that offers privacy and is always open to them (Starr, 2021).

One in 14 children lose a parent before age 18, and the volume of loss is only getting worse, as a recent study found that 140,000 U.S. children have lost a parent or grandparent during the COVID-19 pandemic (Flannery,2022). One student in the class lost her grandmother to covid the day before her birthday. The student was struggling to deal with her grandmother's death and not focusing on class. The teacher was compassionate, supportive and to made appropriate accommodations for her student class work.

Responding to bullying in my future class by talking about it, building a safe school environment, and creating a community-wide bullying prevention strategy with students. Bullying must be responded to quickly and consistently to bullying behavior, it sends the message that it is not acceptable (HRSA, 2022). The results should include recommendation for counseling for the bullies. Two bullying prevention strategies that will be used in my future professional practice would be clear communicating policy and protocols for bullying behaviors to all staff, students, and parents. Encourage eyewitnesses to support and take responsibility for creating a safe and welcoming environment.

Conclusion

In closing, bullying is never acceptable. Students must be encouraged to report the acts and actions of bullies. Addressing any bullying situation immediately lets students know it is not acceptable. Teachers can help kids prevent bullying by students having discussions about it, building a safe school atmosphere.
