Chapter 9 is presented from the perspective that the organization's culture should support high levels of performance and should demonstrate that support in the assessment of employees and allocation of rewards.

i. Edwards and Sproull (1985) identify several important appraisal system features, which they refer to as the 10 commandments of Performance Appraisal. Discuss your experience with appraisal systems. Which of the 10 discussed by the authors have you seen in an appraisal system?

ii. How often do you think performance appraisals should be given? When is the best time for an employee to receive his or her performance appraisal?

iii. How would you feel if you had to involuntarily terminate an employee? What language would you use in delivering the news?

As you examine your hypothetical organization, see if you can clearly identify the key supervisory roles that will need to take place. Discuss what supervisory relationships might be in your organization. Thinking of the Ten Commandments of Performance Appraisals, what mix of performance appraisal methods may best fit your hypothetical organization?
