How much time you spend on your digital technology

Assignment task: Go without as much electronic and digital media for as long as you can (that is, no television, radio, computer, e-mail, social media, ipods, ipads, and cell phones).  Do not jeopardize your job or your school work.  For example, use your computer to submit assignments and discussion posts, and to participate in your paid occupation, but at least go without such social media as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat; do not receive or respond to texts and emails, and do not watch television.  For the best results, go without this kind of technology, especially your social media and your cell phone, for a minimum of three full days. If you have a spring break in this semester, that is an excellent time in which to conduct this experiment.  Note that both parts of this experiment are to be presented in one paper.

Part 1:

1. Describe, prior to your experiment, how much time you spend on your digital technology each day.

2. Describe how long you will forgo which media.

3. Imagine and describe what your life will be like without the media.

4. Imagine and describe how others will react to you when you do not participate in the media (that is, what sanctions might you receive?).

Part 2:

1. Describe your feelings as you go through the experience.

2. Describe what you did to fill in the time you were not engaged with the media, and describe how others treated you.

3. Indicate the most surprising result of your experiment.

4. Explain what this experiment has taught you about how technology affects your relationships with other people, as well as your overall feeling of well-being.
