How is your interpretation similar to or differ from theirs

Assignment task:

Pick the peer below who has an interpretation of a cultural work that might be different from your own.

  • What strikes you about your classmates' chosen works?
  • How is your interpretation similar to or different from theirs?
  • What are some cultural events that you think might have influenced the artists?

The cultural object that I choose is The Scream by Edvard Munch. The artwork of Edvard Munch was influenced by a panic attack that he had suffered while walking on the pier with his friends. The artist as he was walking on the pier with his friends "The sun was setting and the clouds turned red as blood". He sensed a scream passing through nature and felt as if he could actually hear the scream and painted the picture and the clouds like real blood. Much Explained the scream through a series of lines that pressure the figure like a shock wave making an image of the scream a primal image of fear. Edvard Munch showed this effect by showing his two companions were unscathed and that the trauma come from his mind rather than the world outside.

The hallucinatory that the artist was experiencing moved the most because he felt and heard a "scream throughout nature" which details a panic-stricken creature corpse-like and reminiscent of a sperm or fetus, whose contours are echoed in the swirling lines of the blood-red sky. The brightly colored swirling sky and the curving landscape are reminiscent of the vision Munch describes seeing. He's relating as if the world is spinning out of control. This gives us ways to think that the things described in his artwork are the depiction of internal struggle, anxiety, and confusion.

The Scream serves as a reminder that everyone feels scared or panicked or depressed sometimes. The fame of the artwork testament to that. It is something to hold onto at times of personal pain. The fantasy, the romantic notions that we have developed through popular culture never quite lives up to the reality. In pain. munch made it un remarkable and human. That your situation and your mistakes have been made and felt repeatedly before, like a print from a stone lithograph, is a humbling perspective and ultimately funny.
