How history does a good job of appealing to viewers

Assignment task:

The film Kanehsatake: 270 Years of History does a good job of appealing to viewers on the levels of ethos, pathos, and logos. Let's review these terms and think about some possibilities regarding the other parts of the question.

Ethos refers to an appeal based on morality or ethics. Viewers are meant to come to the conclusion that something is right or wrong through the images they see. With regard to the question of children at the blockades, you might think in terms of the moral responsibility to teach the young but also in terms of the moral obligation on both sides to protect the young from violence.

Pathos is an appeal to emotion. Think of the emotional effect that small children at the blockades has on viewers but also on the people on both sides of the conflict. The danger to innocent young children, the act suggests, is worth the risk to preserve culture and to show that the culture belongs to those children as well.

Logos involves reason. It tries to appeal to people's intellects and logic. The parents, we are invited to consider, might have good reasons for bringing their children to the blockades. It is an object lesson for those children in what it takes to preserve one's culture and to stand up for one's rights even in the face of resistance.

With all of these ideas in mind, then, think about whether, in your view, the Mohawks were justified in bringing their children to the blockades even with the risk involved.
