Behaviorists argue that science can only study what is directly observable. This means that scientists could examine how features of the environment impact motivational behaviors (e.g., reinforcement schedules, food deprivation), but they could not examine how internal factors (e.g., thoughts, emotions) impact such behaviors. First, list the potential advantages of only studying motivation using this behaviorist approach. Next, list the potential disadvantages of only studying motivation using this behaviorist approach. Last, indicate your personal opinion-do you believe motivation should be studied only using factors that can be directly observable? Why or why not?
