How do your ideas connect to media sources you have chosen

Assignment: Identity Diversity & Community

Topic chosen is Culture. Choose at least three different media sources (print, film, TV, radio, internet, etc.) to address in your analysis, and discuss how gender and sexuality interact with other structures of difference to produce specific cultural messages about your topic. The file will consist of 2 parts:

A. Annotated Bibliography of Media Sources

o Authorship (who made this text?)

o Purpose (what is the message? Who is speaking? Who is the audience? How do you know?) Each annotation must be accompanied by either a link to the source or a hard copy. These annotations should be dense, but no longer than 1-2 pages each.

B. Essay

Write a 5 to 9 pages essay that offers an overview and analysis of your media files. Your essay should be formatted as follows:

Introduction - introduce your topic and how it relates to identity, gender, and sexuality and state what media sources you chose to analyze. Offer an overview of each media file. What is it? Print? Social Media? Video? Podcast? etc. What does it address? What is its context - where and when was it produced? What position does the author/producer take on the topic and why? What influences the producer's position? What is your analysis/interpretation of the text? How does this source either affirm or challenge structures of difference? What is the text missing-what are its "blind spots"?

This section should be 3 to 5 pages.

Share your own position on the topic you have chosen. What is your position and why? How has your own identity, social position, culture, religion, race, ethnicity, age, gender, etc. impacted your ideas? How do your ideas connect to the media sources you have chosen? Are they similar? Do your ideas conflict with any of the producers? Explain. How does your topic and your ideas intersect with other areas of your life? Don't forget your conclusion and include a reference page and citations where appropriate. Final page Offer a brief overview of your topic Why did you choose it and what did you learn? How do your ideas relate to your media files? How did the media file project - and the class - impact your understanding of identity?
