How do you compare the narrative to arirang and sa-i-gu

Problem

I. This is from Episode 5 of Asian Americans, Breaking Through. Why is it important to learn about the history of the 1992 Los Angeles civil unrest? How does this connect with events today? What connections can you see between this part of U.S. history and the present?

II. Reflect on Arirang Part 1. There are several key figures important to the Korean fight for liberation. What were some differences you found between Syngman Rhee and Dosan Ahn Chang Ho? Check out these papers by Dr. Rhee and this very important archive dedicated to Dosan.

III. Sa-I-Gu: From Korean Womens' Perspective offers us some insights into the riots from a gender-specific lens. One of the results of the LA riots was the shift in power dynamics within the Korean American community, with more outspoken younger people who represent the "1.5" and "2.0" generations speaking for the community and demanding a voice. Who should speak for a particular community? What role should age and gender play? How can voices such as these women's voices be better heard?

IV. Reflect on Arirang Part 2. What were some of the most compelling moments for you? Did you notice certain omissions in the narrative? (I did... one VERY important factual bit of info was left out....)

V. Explore koreanamericanstory org website. What is useful about an archive like this?

VI. Grace Lee has made her interactive film K-Town 92(2017) publicly available. How do you compare this narrative to Arirang and Sa-I-Gu?
