How do multiple modalities contribute to this goal present

Assignment: Multimodal Rhetorical Analysis

Length: 750-1000 words

Situation: We have studied multimodality, and you know from your own life that multimodal texts define much of our collective rhetorical experience today. Using the skills we have practiced in class, you will now have a chance to analyze the rhetorical dimensions of a multimodal text.

Task: You will choose a multimodal text and perform a rhetorical analysis of it. You may choose any of the texts that we looked at together as part of our class (links are on D2L), or you may use the text you (or a classmate) brought to class to share. So far, we have encountered several terms that help with analysis, including ethos, pathos, logos, claims, reasons, assumptions, evidence, and qualifiers. You will choose some of these to use in your analysis. The guiding questions of your analysis should be these: What is the text trying to persuade the audience to think or do? How does it perform this persuasion?

How do multiple modalities contribute to this goal? (Also, see SMH, p. 141 for more guiding questions.)

Purpose: Writing the Multimodal Rhetorical Analysis will allow you to apply the knowledge you are building about rhetoric and multimodality to a real-world everyday text; to attend carefully to the rhetorical elements of discourse; and to develop a skill that had strong value in everyday life.
Evaluation Criteria: A successful Multimodal Rhetorical Analysis will do the following:

• Demonstrate that the writer understands and can use basic terms for rhetorical analysis
• Present a convincing analysis of a chosen text that is supported with multimodal textual evidence
• Be free of distracting grammatical, stylistic, and mechanical problems, as appropriate for the genre D2L.
