For this essay, you need to be deviant! Violate a social norm, then analyze the situation sociologically.
First, consider that a social norm is an expectation about what behavior, thoughts, or feelings are appropriate within a given group within a given context.
Context is key.
So, after you violate your social norm, examine the experience and discuss the following questions:
• Why was what you did deviant?
• Is it deviant in some contexts but not in others? Explain.
• What social institutions and structures determine the deviance of your norm violation?
• How did others react to your violation?
• How did you feel when engaging in this action?
