How colorism is defined as prejudice or discrimination

Problem: Provide a supportive peer reply - Colorism is a topic that is not brought up enough to the masses, but it exists within all ethnicities to be transparent and honest. However, to remain on the topic at hand, we shall discuss colorism within the African American community. Colorism is defined as prejudice or discrimination, especially within a racial or ethnic group, favoring people with lighter skin over those with darker skin, according to Merriam-Webster dictionary. Growing up in the inner city of Baltimore, Maryland, I was raised in various parts of the city. Most of the areas were heavily populated by other African Americans, myself being a dark-skinned young male. When in social settings such as school, I was deemed less "desirable" than other boys who had a lighter pigmentation. Girls at the time were more prone to tell "too black jokes" to demean me or undermine my facial features. However, boys my age would also tell similar types of jokes. There have also been times when I was younger, when in stores I would be watched more closely than my peers, because my being darker meant I was more susceptible to crime. Through these experiences, I remained true to myself and always took the high road, no matter how much it hurt my feelings. I will admit the younger I was, the more I would be quick to snap back at someone being rude to me, but as I got older, I learned that I could not expect people to have the same type of respect for others as I was raised and taught to maintain.
