Assignment: An Interdisciplinary Scholarly Project

Case Studies

Theoretical Context: The Case Study as a genre turns a lens towards an individual, a particular group, a place of activity, or an event. Each is bounded in time and place. A case study researcher studies the particulars of a case in order to look deeper into a question or phenomenon. The case study is not generalizable to everyone, but it highlights the unique qualities of a case to give us new insights into the world. The case study crosses almost all academic disciplines: from the social sciences, to the sciences, to business, to the humanities, and even to the arts. While the form, structure, and use of case studies differ across the disciplines, they share an emphasis on inductive and deductive inquiry to know our world(s) better.

Purpose: Case studies often begin with a question that the researcher wants to know more about or illustrates/adds to a complex idea. A case study can show a gap in disciplinary thinking about an issue. It can illustrate a problem or injustice with more complexity or clarity. It can inquire into human nature and motivation, and how we may act differently.

Assignment: The scholarly research that accompanies case studies can often be culled from multiple disciplines. For this assignment, we will focus on individual people or companies: a person or company who can be found in the media. This focus represents a cultural studies approach to your case study, and you will do interdisciplinary research to examine your question. You will 1) analyze the ways in which your subject answers your questionand 2) you will provide a discussion of implications with scholarly research. You can choose the best organization for your purposes. Do not report on your case - analyze it.
