Thomas Dublin argues in his essay that "the Lowell mills both exploited and liberated women in ways unknown to the pre-industrial economy." Do you agree? In what ways were they exploited? CLASSMATE RESPONSE:

Samuel:
I do agree with Dublin's quote in which he said, "the Lowell mills both exploited and liberated women in ways unknown to the pre-industrial economy." Women were exploited because they were paid low wages, which were continually cut, and did not have the opportunity to advance in the mills. Women were liberated because they were finally getting jobs on a large scale. This was the first workforce to be made mostly of women. Women's social and economic roles were changed mainly due to the fact that they could now get jobs of their own. Men also began to realize that women could organize events and were continually getting better at it. They were starting to see that women had rights too, not just men. This changed American society as a whole. Family life was even altered because women and even children could now work in a large workforce.
