Assignment details:

• History of Biblical Interpretation Paper: In this course, each student must read through Martin Luther's Commentary on Romans. While reading students should take note of the particular biblical passages that Luther's uses and the ways in which he reads Scripture (both Old and New Testaments).

• The student should pick one passage of Scripture that Luther uses in this commentary and compose a history of interpretation paper on that passage. The paper should begin with a summary and analysis of the way that Luther uses the particular passage and then explain how at least two other interpreters (the student may choose any combination of ancient, medieval, Reformation, post-Reformation or modern commentators) read the same passage.

• So for example, students could choose to compare Luther's interpretation of a passage with the interpretation of the same text in any of the church fathers or medieval theologians including: Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Origen, Augustine, Jerome, Gregory, Anselm, Aquinas, etc... Again, the student can choose to compare Luther with one pre-Reformation interpreter and one post-Reformation interpreter including: (Luther, Calvin, Hubmaier, Edwards, Barth, or any contemporary commentary on the passage).

After walking through the three separate authors, the student should conclude with a summary of the different readings of the same passages that communicate each of their strengths and weaknesses. The student should evaluate these readings using a variety of primary and secondary resources and the paper should not merely report these readings, but reflect good evaluative research.

• You need to use at least 10 sources. The Bible, regardless how many versions are cited, counts as 1 source. Choose good reputable scholarly sources.

Those who use modern commentaries are encouraged to choose one that is appropriate for scholarly work, especially those that deal extensively with the original languages (Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic) and have footnotes. Please do not cite Wikipedia or any general wiki source. The paper will be graded on both form (15%) and content (85%).
