The student I have been working with, Tommy Reid, is in 5th grade. Tommy is a transitional reader; he reads at a good pace and has strategies for figuring out words (Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (2012). For instance, Tommy uses the dictionary to look up words that he is unsure of. He enjoys class free reading time, he reads independently and rarely asks for assistance with a word. He enjoys reading about the Presidents of the United States and likes to find books in the library about his favorite President. He also enjoys and trying to stump his teacher on historical events and dates. For instance he might ask "Do you know who the 8th President was?" or "Do you know who was President when the U.S. entered World War II?"
