Health Promotion Planning and Evaluation

Using your classmate's discussion of a health issue, create a program rationale using Figure(attached) from the textbook as the basis. Your rationale should include the title, description of the health concern and its effects on the specified priority population (including supporting data from at least one scholarly source), a brief description of the proposed program, and a justification for why the program would be effective.

Use a minimum of one scholarly source for each response, formatted according to APA style as outlined by the Ashford Writing Center.

Yasmine Discussion One that I think is a huge concern of the population is the obese population, which has been medically recognized as a disease by the American Medical Association. (Kelly Fitzgerald, 2013) Obesity can affect everyone and anyone, which is why it is so concerning.

The World Health Organization even states, "In 2016, 39% of women and 39% of men aged 18 and over were overweight." (2016) Society does not make things easier by making unhealthy food options more easily accessible than healthier food options.

Technology also contributes to the disease with more kids choosing to stay in and play video games instead of play outdoors. One could go on and on about the things that contribute the obesity epidemic. The plain fact is that America is all about profiting.

For fast food restaurants to go through health transformation is not likely because the demand is so high for their products. We as a society need make it a priority to educate our children on healthy eating habits as to better prevent this epidemic from worsening in the future.

We can even take a few lessons from other countries with lower obesity rates. Countries like India, Japan, and Italy rank low in obesity rates according to the World Health Organization's country obesity comparison chart.(2018)

I know that the USDA's food and Nutrition service has put into play a program that betters the school lunches of students. It is called the National School Lunch Program (NSLP).

They help provide nutritious lunches for students at low cost or even free of charge. (USDA Food and Nutrition, 2018) This is a step in the right direction! Another program that is actually based in my own town is called Healthy and Active Before 5. They state, "The goal of Healthy and Active Before 5 is to create a healthier Contra Costa by increasing options for healthy eating and active living in our county through focusing on supportive environments and positive parenting." (Contra Costa County Prevention Institute Staff, n.d)

It is obvious that in order to stop the problem that this nation has with obesity, we have to reach the children. We must train them to take care of themselves right from the get go or our numbers will never decline.
