Problem:
The goals of the ABLE Project are to reduce unnecessary harm to civilians, improve police and community relations, reduce unnecessary harm to officers, improve officer health and wellness, reduce officer loss of employment, improve officer job satisfaction, a reduction of lawsuits against police departments/city/individual officers, and improve citizen satisfaction with their agency (Georgetown Law, 2023). Yet, the overarching goal of the ABLE Project is to train officers on how to intervene to prevent maltreatment. Program Structure and Implementation The ABLE Project is based on thorough social science research and adult-based learning methods (Georgetown Law, 2025) and comes at no cost to law enforcement agencies if they are willing to follow the regulations of the ABLE Project. The community accountability aspect of the project is pivotal as ABLE requires a letter from two independent, community-based organizations assuring the sincerity of the law enforcement agencies' interest in ABLE (Georgetown Law, 2025). The training outlined by ABLE requires an initial full day (eight hours) of training and two (2) hours of annual training with curriculum provided by ABLE.
