Discussion

In this world there are numerous ways that we as humans can teach by example. The first way would be to use ourselves as examples. That can be done by teaching someone how to perform a certain action. A second way would be through embracing "aspects of character, skill, manner, and style -of showing someone how to be a certain kind of person" (Mcewan, 2011, p. 510). One teaches by example their not only showing them the way you do things or telling them what rules they should be following they must also follow certain "virtues, dispositions, and attitudes, as well as particular skills" (Mcewan, 2011, p. 510).

Having a toddler I demonstrate this method of teaching daily. It is important for my toddler to see me carry myself in a way that is fitting so that she will pick up on those things and incorporate them when around other adults or children. I respect all that I come into come in contact with, I watch my verbiage around her because her little brain is nothing but a sponge , and is soaking up and hanging my every word and movement. I expect her to be respectful at all times, to speak up when she needs to, and set examples for other children she may be around.

Teaching by example can very well influence the development of ethical and moral reasoning as well as cultural sensitivity and awareness. When you think of teaching by example this you realize that it can end up with a negative outcome.

Let's say you are intending to teach your children that it is important to treat all people with respect, but they then witness that same parent being disrespected and allowing it to happen they start to feel that respecting others does warrant respect back so why do it? So what the parent intended to teach the children "is quite different from what the teacher intended" (Mcewan, 2011, p. 511).

Rosseau seems to think that teaching by example is useless, and finds that socialization does nothing to help shape behavior. He feels that " 'everything is good when it comes forth from God's hands, everything degenerates in man's hands' (Mcewan, 2011, p. 513). I feel that this can seem like it has merit behind it, but to me it doesn't.

It is important to start early with a child teach a child in the way that should go and they will never depart from it. Yes everything that God handles is good, but not all man destroys it. Man is not perfect, but a majority has the need to want to do the right thing. When your taught certain values and morals early own then it sticks with you. Teachings that I learned when I was younger I never forgot, and I am able to teach my children the same teachings. Teaching by example is ongoing and consistent thing. Even as an adult you continue to learn, and continue to be taught.
