Effective Organizational Training Programs

Given the changing employee demographics and rapid updates to technology, it is important for organizations to link training and development to the needs and preferences of its workforce. Training facilitates acquisition of new knowledge and skills, and development facilitates the ability to handle future responsibilities. Continual training helps ensure that employees have the skills, information, and motivation required to successfully achieve organizational objectives.

Based on the company you chose for your discussion question this week (see post below), form a

PowerPoint presentation which includes the following:

  • Summarize the current organizational training program.
  • Explain why you believe the organization's current training model is effective or ineffective
  • Present an idea for a new training program or component to the existing training program which would promote employee engagement
  • Explain why the new program or component would be effective
  • Describe the desired outcomes of the new training program/component

The presentation should be between 10-15 slides. The speaker notes section should be used to provide an explanation of each slide. APA style should be followed.

Discussion Post:

My company has a training site on the intranet (employees website) entitled "My Learning Center". Within this platform is several training modules and courses. Depending upon what position or filed you are in within the company determines what courses will show mandatory for each individual upon logging on. Additionally, there are several resources in this platform with suggested modules/videos to view to further knowledge whatever it is an employee wants to learn more about. My Learning Center is a wonderful platform for employee training. It allows the employee to work at their own pace and further their curiosity/abilities by an endless resource.

Another training technique my employer utilizes is "Go To Webinar". This is a platform where webinars and training sessions are given remotely online. The sessions are live and the attendees have to call in while watching on their computer or utilize the speakers on their computer to talk. There is an option to raise your hand where the speaker can unmute you and give you access to speak, or attendees can type messages/questions in the chat box for the presenter too address during the session. Another feature of this training platform is giving remote access to another user, where the attendees will then view what's on their screen. Theses sessions can be recorded and emailed out to recipients incase something was missed or questions weren't answered.

I actually enjoy both training platforms and have learned so much at my own pace, with the option to go back and review something I may have missed. However, the best form of training that I comprehend most is hands on. I have to travel out of state to my company's headquarters to train with someone else in my position. I have also had different people fly in to my office and train me or different programs and procedures. I think its solely on the individual and how well they retain information to decide which type of training method is best for them.
