geometrical or cis-trans isomerism

Geometrical or cis-trans isomerism

The compounds that have similar molecular formula but differ in the relative spatial arrangement of atoms or groups in space are termed as geometrical isomers and the phenomenon is termed as geometrical isomerism. The isomer in which identical sets or atoms are on similar side of the double bond is known as cis form and the isomer where same groups or atoms are on the opposite side is known as trans-isomer.
