Fundamental component of psychiatric nursing

Problem:

Reply to Communication is a fundamental component of psychiatric nursing and nursing in general. Since I work in a busy pediatric emergency department, we deal with a lot of psychiatric patients from all ages as young as 5 years old to 18 years old. According to Chapter 2 Therapeutic  Communication and the Nurse-Client Relationship, "using communication styles and methods that demonstrate caring, respect, active listening, authenticity, and trust." American Nurses Association.(2021) By demonstrating these methods helps with the nurse-client relationship. I also believe that being non-judgmental helps even if you don't agree with what a patient did prior to coming to get help. When I keep an open mind and my guard down, the patients tend to open up and tell about what is going on.

Reflection:

Therapeutic communication has applied while working with psychiatric patients in the emergency department, as well as, in nursing school. While working in the emergency department, I use therapeutic communication all the time especially with the parents. Most people that come to the emergency department with their child are just as scared as the child and they feel helpless. Stopping to take a moment while sitting down with them and acknowledging their feelings and spending time with their child, helps with caring for the child. While in nursing school, therapeutic communication will help during clinical with getting to know new patients and my clinical instructor. Need Assignment Help?
