ASSIGNMENT 1

This is the beginning of your journey to becoming an effective speaker! Strong oral communication skills will be valuable to you throughout your academic journey and are in high demand by many employers. In this course, you'll have multiple opportunities to practice and improve your speaking skills through a variety of assignments.

Your first assignment is to prepare and deliver a short, introductory speech. Don't worry-your first speech doesn't have to be perfect. Assignment 1 is your first opportunity to complete the process of outlining, delivering, and recording a speech with the Webcam Recorder tool. You will also review and reflect on your speech.

This chapter covers listening skills that will help you complete your Self Review.

• Chapter 4: Giving Your First Speech.
This chapter covers the steps you'll complete to prepare and deliver your speech.

Assignment 1.1: Introductory Speech Outline

1) Select either Topic A or Topic B for your introductory speech.

o Topic A: Elevator Pitch | Deliver an elevator pitch that describes your professional background and experience for a potential employer during a job interview.

o Topic B: Dream Career | Discuss your dream career.

2) Create an outline or speaking notes in Microsoft Word.

o Download the Microsoft Word template in the "Assignment 1.1" section located in Week 2 of your course.

o Focus your speech on 2-3 main points so you'll stay within the 2-minute time limit.

Assignment 1.2: Introductory Speech and Self-Review

1) Part 1: Record or upload your speech.

o Refer to your outline or speaking notes to deliver your speech. Do not read your notes word for word.

o Follow the technical instructions for recording your video in the "Assignment 1.2" section.

o Remember to watch your recording. Do you want to submit it, or do you want to record another version?

2) Part 2: Complete the self-review questions.

o After you have recorded your speech, address the self-review questions in the "Assignment 1.2" section. This reflection helps you step back and take a second look at your work, with an eye on improvement and highlighting your achievements!

ASSIGNMENT 2

You've learned a lot about effective speaking and you're already working on improving your delivery skills. It's time to take the next step toward becoming a powerful speaker! Your second assignment is to prepare and deliver a well-researched, informative speech. Everything you've read and practiced so far in this course relates directly to successful informative speaking.

This chapter will help you create a well-organized speech that connects with your audience.

• Chapter 10: Giving Your First Speech.
This chapter will help you prepare a strong introduction and conclusion for your speech.

Assignment 2.1: Informative Speech Outline

1) Select either Topic A or Topic B for your informative speech.

o Topic A: How to Succeed in College | Deliver a speech about a process.

o Topic B: History of Your Hometown | Deliver a speech about an event.

2) Create an outline or speaking notes in Microsoft Word.

o Download the Microsoft Word template in the "Assignment 2.1" section.

o Develop a specific purpose, central idea, and several main points so you'll stay within the 3-minute time limit.

o You must use at least two quality resources.

3) Submit the completed Microsoft Word template in Blackboard (this is separate from your speech/self-review).

Assignment 2.2: Informative Speech and Self-Review

1) Part 1: Record or upload your speech.

o Refer to your outline or speaking notes to deliver your speech. Do not read your notes word for word.

o Follow the technical instructions for recording your video in the "Assignment 2.2" section located in your course.

o Remember to watch your recording. Do you want to submit it, or do you want to record another version?

2) Part 2: Complete the self-review questions.

Assignment 3: HR Management and New Hires

Imagine you are the HR manager at a company, and a female employee came to you upset because she felt a male coworker was creating a hostile work environment by repeatedly asking her out on dates even after she said "no". What would you do?

Write a one page paper in which you:

1. Formulate the conversation you would have with the employee, based the concepts found in Chapter 2 in your textbook.

2. Summarize the conversation you would have with the employee's male co-worker, based on the concepts found in Chapter 2 of your textbook.

Imagine you are the HR manager at a company. You need to hire three new people. One employee will work at the front desk as a customer service assistant, and the other two will work on the production line. Give at least five places you would recruit for each position and explain why each place would be a viable option.

Write a one page paper in which you:

1. Select at least five places you would recruit for a customer service assistant and at least five places you would recruit for production line workers.

2. Explain why each place you selected would be a viable option for recruiting employees.

Format your assignment according to the following formatting requirements:

1. The answer should be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides.
