Human Resource Management

For your final project, you will prepare an overview, analysis and recommendation for any HRM program, policy and/or process identified as needing further review.  This project will help you to demonstrate knowledge of topic and ability to articulate a solution for a concern or challenge in HRM that has been identified.

Topic of choice must be submitted by module 2 for approval.  

The project must focus on one of the following HRM areas: 

Human Resource Management topics:

  1. Planning
  2. Strategy and Innovation
  3. Recruitment, Selection 
  4. Training and Development 
  5. Employee Relations  
  6. Compensation & Benefits 
  7. HRIS
  8. Performance Appraisal and Performance Management 
  9. Other topics must be approved by instructor (could include diversity, multi-cultural workforce, multi-Generational Workforce, EEO guidelines)

For example, If you choose HRM planning, you might consider researching what is involved in an organizational structure and financing related to structures and staffing, how do organizations properly plan for HRM needs; for Compensation and Benefits you might focus on the impact and changes that the Affordable Care Act has had on benefit design options for organizations and what this might mean for a benefit specialist; for Performance Management, you might select a process that is currently used in an organization to address performance appraisals and ways to improve this process; for Training and Development you might focus on the challenges associated with need analysis and develop a strategy to build appropriate training and development curriculum;

Outline for project should include:

Introduction and overview of topic including a problem statement identified that you will build out further.

Identify the area of focus that helps increase your awareness and insight into how an organization operates and provide understanding of the requirements of the value of HRM both internally and externally.   This is often referred to as a human resource value proposition. 

  1. Provide an overview of the program and/or idea that you have researched.
  2. Create a compelling argument to support the value that this HRM function has for an organization, individual and/or stakeholder.  
  3. Discuss how your ideas supports the organization's strategic objectives. 
  4. Based on your evaluation, provide recommendations for the improvement of the effectiveness of the program, policy and/or practice.
  5. Please provide any materials used to reference your research.  For example, a copy of a training plan; a job analysis form or a copy of the policy; a benefit design summary.  You can find some of this information posted on the www.SHRM.org website which is a great source of information to help you with this project.  
  6. Locate three-four published (peer reviewed) articles (in addition to any assigned in the classroom) related to the selected topic area and program, policy and/or practice selected.   
  7. The paper should be 7-8 pages total (include references), double spaced and should include your general problem statement, research and opinion on the overall value of this program, policy and/or practice.  
  8. This project should become part of your portfolio of knowledge gained within the management path. Please keep a copy of this project to show future employers what you have learned in your undergraduate studies specific to human resource management.
