Find helpful in order to write a position paper addressing

Question:

There are several readings. Use these and any other resources (provided they are strong scientific sources) you find helpful in order to write a position paper addressing the risks and benefits of GMO technology.

Please make sure to differentiate CLEARLY between fact and opinion, cite sources for facts, and support your opinions either with factual evidence or a strong ethical argument. You should probably take a look at the new NAS report on GMOs as well.

You may wish to consider some or all of the following issues:

- 1st world vs. 3rd world countries

- Population growth and associated issues/concerns

- While you''re welcome to address the "slippery slope" of genetic engineering (will we start engineering larger animals? people?), beware that "slippery slope" is a common rhetorical fallacy, so be careful here. Note that just because A might eventually lead to B, C, D, E...Z, and Z is bad, does not mean (in and of itself) that we should not allow A.

Your grade will NOT be based upon your position on GMOs. Rather, your grade WILL be based upon:

- Thorough reading of sources and utilization of additional sources if appropriate

- Significant incorporation of (and demonstrated understanding of) relevant scientific facts

- Appropriate referencing of sources

- Significant support for opinions, either ethically or factually, with detailed analysis of the major GMO-associated issues.

You are not being graded on WHAT you think, but on HOW MUCH you think. Remember that the case studies are like exams in this class; they''re a big deal.

Its difficult to imagine that you could do a thorough job on this paper in fewer than 8-10 pages.

It's also difficult to imagine that you would find the list of readings.
