External and internal validity characteristics

Discussion:

External and Internal Validity Characteristics

The proposed research is an examination of behavioral interventions (visual schedules) to improve social skills of preschool aged children with autism. Based on this research problem, it becomes evident that the population will need to be purposively selected which entails utilizing a non-random sampling method.

In terms of the impact of the sampling method on reliability and validity, it is evident that purposive or non-random sampling will limit the ability of the researcher to generalize the findings of the study to the larger population of preschool aged children. Non-random samples are not truly representative and therefore impact outcomes with regard to generalizability. Even though these issues exist, the plan for the research would be to minimize the negative impact of using a non-representative sample by randomly assigning children identified for the study to an experimental (visual schedule) group or control (no visual schedule) group. I am not sure but I think a random assignment of the purposive sample will help address problems with generalizability.

1). Briefly describe how random assignment method of sampling impacts the external and internal validity of this proposed study.
